It is now a little over six months since I first had my chance meeting with Japhet on the road in Mwanza (see the History page). It was then that I learned from him of his plight, that of trying to provide food, shelter and care for ten orphaned children with no hope of help from the authorities.

It has not been easy to operate from here in the UK as an individual, being so many thousands of miles away from Japhet and the children, and without any grass root support in Tanzania. However, thanks to the generosity of some friends here in the UK I have been able to add their donations of money to my own financial contribution and together we have begun to make a difference. So my sincere thanks go out to those people. (And yes you know who you are)!

We started out with just a bare building with a roof.
Now we have a building complete with doors and windows.
We needed toilets
We now have them.
We had a water hole in the ground half a mile away
and now we have a well near to the house.
The children had no proper beds or mattresses
and now they have both.
The children could not attend school without uniforms or shoes and socks
and now they have them.

It is heartening to be able read in the newsletters what has been achieved over the few months and I am committed alongside Japhet, to continuing to help these vulnerable, disadvantaged and needy children to achieve a better life.

So to the Future:

There is still a great deal to be done. Japhet has a very sound idea of what he wants to achieve for the children in order to secure their future. However, he must remain focused daily on their immediate needs: clothing, shelter, food, water, health and education. Would you consider sponsoring one of the children?

By making a small, monthly donation of around £15 will guarantee a better future for them. Please send me an email carol@mchungwaproject.co.uk for direct debit/standing order details.

We need to raise monies to move the Mchungwa Project on:
The local authority or social services stipulate that the boys and girls must sleep in separate rooms, so we need to build some more rooms. A store room is needed to store charcoal for cooking and for other items. A cooking area or small kitchen (jikoni) needs to be added on. The list goes on of course and grows ~ just as the children do and I know with your support we will be able to achieve more and more and more!
